A family-run winery in the southeastern Sicily
An old winery in the countryside.
The sea breeze creeps into the orderly rows of vines, swirls among orange trees and touches on the flourishing garden.
We are in Contrada Fanusa, between the sea and the City: a few kilometers separate our winery from Siracusa, gem of south-east Sicily.
Our family, devoted to the land and the cultivation of vineyards, took over in the ‘700: wine was produced in Contrada Fanusa, was sold in Siracusa, in the workshop of Via Rocco Pirro (in the island of Ortigia) and was exported.
I leave the millstone with the winery
and the land cultivated with Moscato [...]
As Pompeo Picherali (architect born in Siracusa in 1670 and responsible of the post-earthquake reconstruction in 1693) refers in his last will, the land on which still stand the Cantine Gulino was already at that time planted with vines.
The cultivation of vines has been, for a long time, the prevailing agricultural activities in the lands around Siracusa: a long and rich tradition, dating back to Greek age and attested by ancient sources and iconography on archaeological finds, favored by good climate and soil fertility.
In 1848 aretusean territory included 1.400 hectares of vineyards. The terrible phylloxera epidemic, fallen across Europe in the mid ‘800, destroyed many Sicilian vins and damaged the wine business in Siracusa, also the Muscat vineyard in Contrada Fanusa. Many other crops took the place, until our family, early in ‘900, grafted Moscato and Nero d’Avola on american vines, resistant to phylloxera. And the tradition is going on with the descendants.
In 1950, the place was converted into a farm, taking advantage of the favorable climate, mild and with rare frosts.
We planted again, only in 1995, Moscato and Nero d’Avola, renovating the old tradition and restoring the old house: with the winery and its lounges and garden, an ancient, cultural heritage of the city of Siracusa.
